Looking Back, As We Move Ahead.

My daughter asked if I could come help her paint her High School Senior Parking Spot, and without hesitation I jumped at the chance. I asked her if she had a plan, and she said yes. “I’m going to do a play on ‘the day the Crayons quit!” For those that don’t know, it’s a incredibly funny and enjoyable children’s book we read when she was young.

The book tells the tale(s) of the Red Crayon who Works too hard coloring fire engines, Santa Claus, and Valentine hearts. The Blue Crayon Needs a break from coloring endless oceans, lakes, and rivers. The Orange and Yellow Crayons who Stopped speaking because both argue they are the true color of the sun, And the Beige Crayon who Feels tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. I reread the book when I got home, and felt like I should post it in slack and make my team read it.

When we read it before bed, we would giggle at the crayon’s drama and Duncan’s reactions to their notes to him, however, today all I could think about is how this is truly a reflection of all of us. Someday’s I feel like Duncan, and while i try to do my best to make the most of all the colors in the box, sometimes i don’t, or forget they all have a purpose and opportunity. today reminded me to take a look around the people box this week, and find the person who I’m sure feels like ‘Beige Crayon’ gets their chance to stop playing second fiddle to brown.
