Humans Were Designed to Create.
I recently listened to rick rubin on Diary of a CEO podcast and enjoyed his discussion around creating for the moment, and not allowing downstream impacts, or commercial success influence the organic direction of where the journey can take the artist. Create for the sake of creating. Creating for art.
reminded me of a quote “humans were designed to create. This is why you get depressed when all you do is consume.” In a world where we’re not only inundated with quick delivery and a million options for everything, we’re also in a world where the exposure to create is more intimidating than ever. putting something out in the world is scary enough, now we deal have to deal with the speed and Ferocity at which comments get posted, where everyone has an opinion. I believe this has weakened our creative muscle, and intentionally push those around me to have the confidence of being creatively free, and most importantly for my team, block off an hour a week just to think and be creative.
And what I share from Rick’s philosophy around creating what you want, not for anyone else, has spurred some amazing ideas and products that have not only had positive impacts to the business, but the validation, joy and Camaraderie it brings to the team, is unmeasurable. Now not every idea is right at the time, and not every idea is a commercial success; however, I know success doesn’t come without risk, and what better risk than betting on the creativity of humans that were designed to create.
